What is the first thing you think of when you hear the word Tuscany? Rolling hills and wineries are what come to mind for me. If you read our newsletters regularly (and we hope you do), you know that we love to support sustainable companies. Here are three sustainable wineries we love. We can arrange your tour, transportation, and accommodations for these and any other wineries or sights you’d like to visit.
Location: Montalcino, Siena
Known for: Brunello di Montalcino
Doing good: Winemaker Sebastian Nasello has been producing biodynamic wines for more than a decade. Visitors can also sample the estate’s olive oils and tour its organic vegetable garden and working farm.
Private tours and tastings focus on explaining the concept and philosophy behind the Bonsai vineyard and our biodynamic farming choices. Our people will take you on a tour of the vineyards (including the Bonsai, the densest in the world) and describe our different terroirs and how they impact the outcome of the wines. You will taste a selection of wines such as three different Brunello and the Bonsai of which we produce only 900 bottles per year.
Location: San Donato in Poggio, Chianti Classico
Known for: Chianti Classico, Super Tuscans, extra-virgin olive oil
Doing good: The solar-powered, hilltop winery also produces its own grape pomace flour, milled from dried grape skins leftover from the vinification process.
Your tour will be an immersion in the Chianti Classico Region! Thanks to a stroll in the Estate and a visit to the cellar, you will learn about our philosophy of organic viticulture and our winemaking process. At the end of the tour, you will enjoy your lunch that includes 4 different courses, freshly prepared by following a seasonal menu and using only genuine Tuscan ingredients.
All the dishes will be paired with 5 wines from our selection, our fresh extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
Location: Bolgheri, Livorno
Known for: Super Tuscans, Bordeaux-style reds
Doing good: This high-profile winery on Tuscany’s Mediterranean coast partners with a different contemporary artist each year on a special bottle-label design. Proceeds from auctioned bottles are donated to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation to support the Mind’s Eye program, which gives individuals who are blind or have low vision access to museum art.
You will enjoy presentations about the works, installed in different locations along the tour. You then reach the barrel cellar, the “barricaia,” where the French barriques enfold and mature the base wines that will make up Ornellaia and Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, our second vin. The tour concludes with a guided tasting of the current vintages of Le Volte dell’Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia,Variazioni in Rosso dell’Ornellaia and Ornellaia.
