Following my last newsletter about Europe’s majestic rivers, this week, I want to talk about two of Central Europe’s most enchanting cities: Prague and Budapest. Budapest is a common city to begin or end lower Danube river cruises in, and Prague is a logical city to add to either the beginning or end of a Danube river cruise itinerary.

Whether you’re considering an extension of your classical Danube cruise or simply need travel inspiration, these cities promise wonders that are not to be missed. If you missed the last blog post, you can read it here.

The Danube flows eastward from the German riverscapes of the Black Forest through Central and Eastern Europe to the Danube Delta on the Black Sea. It’s often referred to as the Beautiful Blue Danube due to the Strauss waltz of the same name. It can’t truly be described as the blue Danube, but it certainly is a beautiful European river!

A view of Prague, a great city to add to a Danube River cruise itinerary.

Prague – The City of a Hundred Spires

Day 1:

  • Morning: Start your journey at the historic Prague Castle, a breathtaking introduction to the city’s rich history. Stroll through the Royal Gardens and visit St. Vitus Cathedral. There’s a reason the historic old town of Prague is a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
  • Afternoon: Descend to the charming streets of Mala Strana, enjoy lunch at a terrace café, and then explore the colorful Wallenstein Garden.
  • Evening: As twilight falls, walk across the iconic Charles Bridge for picturesque city views, perfect for those golden hour photos.

Day 2:

  • Morning: Immerse yourself in Old Town Prague. The Astronomical Clock and Old Town Square are essentials. Don’t miss tasting the famous Czech trdelník, also called Chimney Cakes, in some places.
  • Afternoon: Venture to the eclectic Jewish Quarter for a deep dive into Prague’s historical depth.
  • Evening: Enjoy a concert or opera at one of Prague’s renowned theaters like the National Theater.

Optional Day 3

  • Day Trip: Consider a trip to the charming town of Kutná Hora or the fairy-tale town of Český Krumlov.

Budapest – Pearl of the Danube

Budapest, Hungary, a frequent stop and great pre or post cruise extension to add to a Danube River Cruise itinerary.

Day 1:

  • Morning: Begin with a self-guided tour of the Parliament Building along the river.
  • Afternoon: Explore the historic castle district, Buda Castle, and its gardens and museums.
  • Evening: Unwind at one of Budapest’s famous thermal baths like Széchenyi or Gellért. They are each a very different experience – ask me if you want more info.

Day 2:

  • Morning: Wander through the vibrant Central Market Hall and snack on local pastries and pickles or have lunch in the “food court” on the 2nd floor. Remember to pick up some paprika to bring home.
  • Afternoon: Take a leisurely cruise on the Danube or explore the city’s Jewish heritage in the Dohány Street Synagogue.
  • Evening: Savor Hungarian cuisine at a Danube-side restaurant. I have a list of my favorite restaurants that I’ll happily share with you!

Optional Day 3

A day trip to Hungary's wine region
  • Day Trip: Spend your day in the heart of Hungary’s wine region and visit Etyek, which is just a short drive from Budapest. Alternatively, discover the artistic town of Szentendre, located along the banks of the Danube.

These itineraries are designed to give you a taste of what Prague and Budapest have to offer, setting the stage for a magical river cruise along the Danube. Both of these cities have captivated my heart, and I never get tired of visiting them.

You can put this pre- and post-itinerary together yourself, but I’d love to do it for you. Of course, you already know that as a travel advisor I specialize in matching clients with the right river cruise.
