As I mentioned in my last blog, we have been getting a lot of inquiries about Africa lately. The first question we get asked is “When is the best time to go?” If you missed that blog, you can read it here .

Because more and more people are checking this amazing bucket list destination off their list, I felt it was important to share some Do’s and Don’ts for an unforgettable African Journey. This list doesn’t just apply to Africa, though; much of it is a common courtesy when traveling to other countries. We often get so caught up in a moment, that we forget these things.

Traveling to Africa is really exciting, but it can also cause some anxiety and uncertainty when knowing what things are ok and not so ok while you are there. We provide as much information as possible for our clients before they travel and below you will find some of the info we provide.

The Do’s

  • Do listen to your guide – This doesn’t just mean following their instructions, ask them questions about the animals, about their families, about their culture. And share about yourself. Your experience will be enhanced so much.
  • Do try the local foods – the flavors are amazing.
  • Do expect the unexpected – some days the animals want to be seen and some days they don’t!
  • Do read the information that your travel advisor gives you to prepare
  • Do be open-minded and flexible – go with an open heart.
  • Do be patient on safari, there’s always something to see and your guide is an expert and finding surprises.
  • Do put your phone or camera down and soak it all in.
  • Do pack lightly – follow the restrictions given.
  • Do bring cash – small bills for tipping and souvenir purchases
  • Do secure your valuables (money and passports) in a safe place at all camps.
  • Take time to learn a few sayings in the local language. Ask your guide to help you with pronunciation.
  • Do ask your guide when meeting local people, if you can take a picture or give a gift. They prefer that you not give the children candy or money.
  • Do download your pictures to Google, online storage, or a computer every night if possible. You don’t want to lose those memories.
  • Do take binoculars—preferably your own pair and one for each family member. The safari vehicle usually only has one or two pairs.
  • Do get travel insurance.

The Don’ts

  • Avoid using strong deodorant and perfume because it disrupts the natural environment and can attract animals.
  • Don’t be a litterbug! Not even a tiny candy wrapper.
  • Minimize the use of plastic when packing for your trip.
  • Don’t walk around without a camp escort if wandering around the camps at night.
  • Don’t drink the water before you inquire about its safety. Camps will provide purified water for you.
  • Exercise caution and avoid taking photographs of border crossings or military vehicles.
  • Steer clear of wearing camouflage attire.
  • Resist the temptation to extend your hands out of the vehicle to photograph passing wildlife, such as lions.
  • Remember not to overthink it; sometimes, simplicity is key.
