We have been getting a lot of inquiries about Africa lately. The first question we get asked is “When is the best time to go?” Well, you know that Africa is a huge continent—it’s more than three times the size of the US. So that means that there is different weather in different African countries at different times of the year.

Because this question has been asked so often, I put together a guide with information about the best time to visit Africa.

BOTSWANA –  The best time for game viewing is June – September. January – March provides the opportunity to see the newborn babies. November – March is the best time for bird viewing.

KENYA – The best time for game viewing is July – September during the Great Migration. Rain is heaviest in April and May.

MADAGASCAR – April to October has the best game viewing, hiking, and participating in water sports activities.

MOZAMBIQUE – March-May is good, with moderate temperatures and May festivals. June—November is the best, with the dry, hot season.

NAMIBIA – May through October is the ideal time to visit Namibia. Wildlife is at its peak from July through October. Avoid January and February due to flood potential.

Rwanda is open year-round, but January – February and June—September are the best times to visit, particularly for gorilla trekking.

SOUTH AFRICA – Year-round! The high season in Cape Town is November through April. The high season for game viewing is June through October.

TANZANIA – The best time for game viewing is June – September. January – March, you can see the calving season of the wildebeest.

UGANDA – Year-round! January – February and June – September are the best times to visit, particularly for gorilla trekking.

ZAMBIA – the best Victoria Falls viewing is April – May. May- July is the cool, dry season that can get quite chilly at night. The hot, dry season, good for wildlife viewing, is Aug – Oct. The best time to view bat migration is November. Parks are closed Dec-May.

ZIMBABWE – Zimbabwe is generally at its best from May to October when temperatures are mild and the weather is dry. April and May provide the most dramatic views of Victoria Falls, but August to December are best for white-water rafting at the falls.
