If you’ve ever stared at an empty suitcase wondering how to pack for a big trip, I’m here to help. Today I’m sharing the travel packing tips I use for my own month-long adventures, starting with the mindset that matters more than any list. By the end, you’ll know how to pack a versatile travel wardrobe that works for weeks of travel without overstuffing your suitcase.
Why a Packing List Isn’t Enough

If there is one question I hear from almost every client, it’s:
“Can you send me a packing list?”
I’m always happy to do that. But a list won’t teach you how to think about packing; it will help you remember your sunglasses! So let’s start there instead.
What to Pack for a Big Trip: My Real-Life Example
My upcoming trip is a perfect example.
I’ll be gone for a month, with a week on a yacht in Croatia, three days in London, a day in Paris, a luxury cruise through Greece and Italy, a three-day business conference, and three days in Naxos.
It sounds like I need a lot of clothes. I don’t. Here’s why.
The First of My Travel Packing Tips: Start With Your Activities

Because the first question you should ask isn’t “What clothes do I need?”
It’s: “What am I actually going to be doing?“
Sightseeing? Hiking? Water sports? Nice dinners? A business conference?
Start with your activities, then build your wardrobe around them.
Once you know what you’ll be doing, the next step is deciding how much to bring. That’s where my favorite rule comes in.
The Secret to Packing Light

My Three-Bottom Rule
Even if you’re traveling for more than a week, I recommend packing as if you’re going for one week.
For me, that means three pairs of pants as the foundation. I’ll add a pair of shorts for this trip too. Then I make sure every top works with at least two of those three bottoms.
Wear a pair of black pants with a simple T-shirt and sneakers, and it’s perfect for a day of sightseeing. Change into a dressier top, add jewelry and a scarf, and suddenly you’re dinner-ready. Same pants. Completely different look.
In fact, from the items in the photo above, I can create 15 outfits without even adding scarves or a sweater.
The three-bottom rule works even better when you pair it with my next trick.
How to Pack a Versatile Travel Wardrobe: Pick a Color Palette
This trick makes packing so much easier.
Choose a small color palette before you start packing, and make sure everything works within it.
Mine for this trip is black, burgundy, grey, and pink.
That means my pants, tops, layers, and accessories can all mix and match. I’m not creating a separate outfit for every day. I’m creating a small wardrobe where almost everything works with almost everything else.
Think of it as the grown-up version of Garanimals. Pick almost any two pieces and they go together
Ready to Test Out Your Packing?
Knowing how to pack for a trip comes down to a few simple travel packing tips: start with your activities, follow the three-bottom rule to pack light, and build a versatile travel wardrobe around one color palette. Whether you’re figuring out what to pack for a month-long trip or a quick getaway, this approach means less luggage and more options. And the best part? You’ll never need to panic over a packing list again.
