First, a New Adventure on My Horizon
I’m leaving in about a month for my next trip. I’ll be visiting 2 new-to-me countries…Croatia and Greece. Plus, I’m checking out a cruise line I haven’t sailed on before… here’s the link to the cruise.
So yes, I love a brand-new destination as much as anyone. But that’s not the whole story.
Why Travel to the Same Place Twice? Italy Has My Answer
There’s a whole world I haven’t seen yet. Countries I’ve never set foot in, food I haven’t tried, a travel list that’s…well, honestly, a little out of control.
But I am always dreaming of my next trip to Italy. I’ve been there seven times.
Seven. And I still want to go back.
Why would I go back to somewhere I’ve already been? I just can’t get enough. Every time I go, I’m reminded there’s still so much left to see and do.
The Benefits of Returning to a Destination
And I think that’s what I’ve come to appreciate about returning to a destination. The first trip might introduce you to a place. The next one can introduce you to a different version of it.
Maybe you explore another region. Maybe you finally make it to the little town you skipped the first time. Maybe you visit in a completely different season. Or maybe you simply slow down because you aren’t trying to see everything for the first time.
For me, the same is also true for Africa, except it’s a continent, not a country! For some, it’s a once-and-done trip. But for me, after 2 visits, there are still so many countries I haven’t set foot in and that I’m curious about.
Traveling to the Same Place Multiple Times vs. Chasing What’s Next
Whether you’re going deeper into a place you love, or wider into places you haven’t touched yet, there’s no need to rush either one.
And I think we’re sometimes given the impression that good travelers should always be looking for what’s next.
The next country. The next city. The next destination to check off the list.
But what if travel doesn’t have to work that way? What if a destination can become part of your story rather than something you simply crossed off?
You don’t have to choose between seeing somewhere new and returning somewhere you love. There’s room for both.
Your Permission Slip: You Can Go Back
So here’s your permission slip: You can go back.
You don’t have to justify returning to a destination you’ve already been. You don’t have to check off a new country just because you think you should. If a place is calling you back, that’s reason enough.
Because sometimes, going back isn’t repeating a trip. It’s continuing the story.
Maybe the goal isn’t to see as much of the world as possible. Maybe it’s to find the places that make you want to come back.

In the end, returning to a destination isn’t a failure of imagination; it’s one of the best-kept secrets of meaningful travel. Whether you’re revisiting a destination for the second time or traveling to the same place multiple times over a lifetime, the benefits of returning to a destination only grow: deeper connections, slower days, and a place that starts to feel like yours. So if anyone asks why travel to the same place twice, you’ll have your answer: because the story isn’t finished yet.
