If you’re planning a trip to Ecuador, you may already have the Galápagos Islands at the top of your list. But there are so many incredible things to do in Quito and the surrounding region that deserve a spot on your itinerary. This blog will walk you through some of my favorite experiences, from historic sites and cultural gems to hot springs, markets, and even coffee farms.

Explore Quito’s Historic Center

Quito’s Historic Center

Every trip to Ecuador should start with a visit to Quito, the world’s highest official capital city at about 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Quito’s Old Town is filled with colonial architecture, ornate churches, and lively plazas. Don’t miss the gilded interior of La Compañía de Jesús and panoramic views from El Panecillo.

Visit the Middle of the World

Mitad del Mundo near Quito

Once you’ve explored Quito’s Old Town, make your way to the Mitad del Mundo monument. Here, you can stand on the equator with one foot in each hemisphere and snap the classic photo. Nearby, the Intiñan Museum offers interactive exhibits about Ecuador’s indigenous cultures and fun equator-line experiments—like balancing an egg on a nail.

Day Trip to Cotopaxi National Park

Cotopaxi National Park is a must-do from Quito

From Quito, outdoor adventure is never far away. Just two hours from the city, Cotopaxi is one of the world’s highest active volcanoes. You can hike to the glacier line, ride horses across the Andean plains, do some bird watching, or simply enjoy breathtaking views of snowcapped peaks.

Tour a Rose Plantation

Rose plantation near Quito

Ecuador is world-famous for its long-stemmed roses, many grown for export, with the U.S. being the top market. A rose plantation tour shows you the high-altitude growing process as you stroll through fragrant greenhouses, often ending with a bouquet to take home. And here’s a fun fact: near where I live, you can buy four dozen long-stem roses for just $5!

Shop at Otavalo Indigenous Market

Otavalo Indigenous Market

After soaking in the fragrance of roses, switch gears to the vibrant colors of Otavalo Market. One of South America’s largest markets, Otavalo is especially lively on Saturdays and can feel like a sensory overload—in the best way. You’ll find colorful textiles, handcrafted jewelry, leather goods, and fresh produce, all while connecting with local artisans and their traditions.

Relax at Papallacta Hot Springs

Papallacta Hot Springs, one of the best things to do in Quito

When it’s time to unwind, Papallacta Hot Springs is the perfect retreat. With nine thermal pools surrounded by stunning mountain scenery, it’s a wonderful way to relax before or after your Galápagos adventure. I recommend going after your island trip and staying a night or two in the beautiful lodge for the full experience.

Experience Riolindo Coffee Farm

Riolindo Coffee Farm

Last but certainly not least, head to the Intag Valley for a stop at Riolindo Coffee Farm. This family-run property gives you a hands-on look at the coffee-making process, from picking cherries to sipping fresh Arabica. You’ll also find hiking trails, birdwatching opportunities, and a peaceful setting that makes it easy to slow down and savor life in the cloud forest. For me, it’s the best coffee I’ve ever had, and the farm is owned by my friend Janet Narum—if you visit, be sure to tell her I said hello!
