In this Turkey Travel Guide, I’m sharing highlights from my time in Istanbul, Cappadocia, and Bodrum, three regions that each felt completely distinct from one another. From bustling bazaars and cave hotels to coastal scenery and ancient ruins, this journey offered a deeper look into the incredible variety Turkey has to offer.

Istanbul

The first stop, and the city I’d been most excited to see, was Istanbul.

When I arrived, I was greeted with a VIP meet-and-greet and a transfer into the city. Istanbul makes an immediate impression. It is vast, layered, and full of energy. I was completely drawn in.

The Spice Market, Grand Bazaar, and a Traditional Hammam

My first day started with a private half-day tour of the Spice Market and Grand Bazaar. Yes, it is busy, but with a guide to help navigate the quieter corridors, you find centuries-old passageways filled with spices, ceramics, and endless varieties of Turkish delight. I had a few things I was specifically looking for. I definitely did not plan to buy a lamp, but it is beautiful, and I love it.

That same day, I experienced a traditional hammam. It is hard to compare it to anything else. The heat, marble, exfoliation ritual, and silence create something both grounding and deeply restorative. It was one of the standout experiences of the entire trip. For privacy reasons, very few pictures are allowed, but here is the link to where I went…you have to check out the bubbles!

A Whirling Dervish Performance and Istanbul’s Iconic Sites

As a sort of last-minute decision, I attended a traditional dinner and a Whirling Dervish performance one evening. Watching them was unexpectedly moving. It is a spiritual practice, not a show, and the dancers’ focus and calm were mesmerizing. Then we had a full Turkish feast, from multiple kebabs to mezze, soups, and desserts, paired with endless tea and coffee. It was one of my most memorable meals in Turkey.

We also had a full-day tour of the city’s top sites, including Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace. You feel Istanbul’s history everywhere you stand.

Cappadocia

After the pace of Istanbul, the next stop felt like stepping into a completely different world.

It is a short flight to Cappadocia, where we stayed in a cave hotel carved into volcanic rock. It was peaceful, warm, and a super unique hotel experience.

Fairy Chimneys and Cave Dwellings

Our hot air balloon flight was canceled due to the weather, which is not uncommon. It was disappointing, but our guide more than made up for it. The valleys and “fairy chimney” rock formations feel almost unreal in scale and shape. We spent the day walking through cave dwellings and open valleys that felt otherworldly.

Lunch with a Local Family

Another memorable moment was lunch in the home of a local family. Experiences like that are always a highlight for me.

Bodrum

From the heights of Cappadocia, we headed for the coast, with one important stop on the way.

On our way to Bodrum, we went through Izmir and visited Ephesus.

Bodrum felt completely different from the intensity of Istanbul and the stillness of Cappadocia. Whitewashed buildings, blue water, and the slower rhythm of the coast made it feel instantly relaxing.

The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus

We visited the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and explored the harbor and castle areas. I didn’t realize how much history was there, including one of the original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World: the Mausoleum itself.

Final Thoughts

After ten days across three very different regions, a few things stood out.

Turkey stands out for its variety. In a single trip, you get deep history, extraordinary food, genuine hospitality, and completely different landscapes that feel worlds apart. I would suggest a minimum of three nights in each location.

Turkey surprised me in the best possible way. If you’re considering a trip and want help deciding where to go, how long to stay, or how to combine these regions, feel free to reach out.
