Why Visit Puglia, Italy: It Has Everything I Love About Italy
It’s no secret that I love Italy! I’ve been lucky enough to visit a lot of the country, but after visiting Puglia, I kept coming back to the same thought: Puglia has everything I love about Italy. Well, maybe not the summer heat!
Historic cities. Whitewashed hill towns. Extraordinary food. Local wine. Ancient traditions. Beautiful hotels. A stunning coastline. And a sense that you’re experiencing somewhere that still genuinely belongs to the people who live there.
Let me walk you through the trip, town by town.
Bari: A Port City with a Real Pulse
We started in Bari. It’s a real city with a real pulse… narrow alleyways, lively piazzas, locals going about their actual lives. It’s a port city, so there are tourists, but it never felt touristy to me. My favorite moment was watching the nonna’s make orecchiette by hand right outside their front doors. Not a demonstration, not a cooking class. Just something they do. It’s been passed down for generations, and it shows.
Matera and the Ancient Sassi Cave Dwellings
From Bari, we went to Matera, which is technically in the neighboring region of Basilicata, but it gets included on most Puglia itineraries, and honestly, it should. The ancient cave dwellings there, the Sassi, are one of those places that’s hard to explain until you’re standing in the middle of it. It just doesn’t look like anywhere else on earth.
Ostuni: Puglia’s Whitewashed White City
Next was Ostuni, the White City. Remember a few weeks ago when I wrote about my favorite hotel? The whole town sits up on a hill above olive groves, and the whitewashed streets kind of glow in the afternoon sun. Wandering through the city, where every turn leads to a café, a courtyard, or a view, is so fun.
From Ostuni, it’s a short drive into the countryside that Puglia is famous for.
A Day in the Itria Valley
The Trulli Houses of Alberobello
We also spent a day in the Itria Valley. Alberobello is where the famous trulli houses are, those cone-roofed structures that look completely made up until you see them in person.
Locorotondo and Cisternino
Locorotondo has beautiful views out over the countryside. And Cisternino just feels wonderfully local. Quiet streets, a slower pace. The kind of place where you’re in no rush to leave.
Of course, no trip through this region would be complete without talking about what’s on the table.
Food and Wine in Puglia
Food and wine are woven into everything here. We visited a local winery, ate meals built around ingredients grown just a few miles away, and I have to say… the olive oil alone is worth the trip. It’s not just something produced there. It’s part of the whole identity of the region.
Lecce, the Florence of the South, and a Day Trip to Otranto
We finished in Lecce, which people call the Florence of the South. And we stayed in an eighteenth-century palace! The baroque architecture is really incredible, and I just loved wandering around. Lively squares, outdoor cafés, beautiful buildings everywhere you look. One day, we took a day trip to Otranto on the Adriatic coast, which was a completely different vibe. More relaxed, more coastal, a nice way to end the trip.
Why Puglia Is Worth a Serious Look
What got me most was how much variety there is within one destination. Every town felt different. Every meal felt local. No two days looked the same.
